Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd is a UK-based electronic-scanning radar and sensor solution provider delivering an integrated multi-sensor package to systems integrators comprising the Blighter electronic-scanning radars, cameras, thermal imagers, trackers and software solutions. Blighter radars combine patented solid-state Passive Electronic Scanning Array (PESA) technology with advanced Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Doppler processing to provide a robust and persistent surveillance capability. Blighter Surveillance Systems (BSS) products are manufactured under a BS EN ISO 9001:2008 certified management system.
The Blighter family of radar products can be used to detect a wide variety of moving objects including: crawling and walking persons, land vehicles, boats and low flying aircraft (including UAVs). The radars use a microwave radio signal to scan areas of land or water which can extend up to 32 km in range and up to a full 360° in azimuth. The family of Blighter products and configurations allow cost effective solutions to be selected for a variety of market areas including defence, national border security, critical infrastructure protection and coastal security. The Blighter radar family includes medium-range battery-powered portable systems for rapid deployment, medium-range mast mounted mobile systems and long-range fixed installation and mobile systems.
The Blighter electronic-scanning (e-scan) FMCW Doppler ground surveillance radar (GSR) is a unique patented product that provides robust intruder detection capabilities under the most difficult terrain and weather conditions. With no mechanical moving parts and 100% solid-state design, the Blighter radar family of products are extremely reliable and robust and require no routine maintenance for five years. The Blighter radar can operate over land and water, rapidly searching for intruders as small as a crawling person or a kayak and is even able to detect low flying objects. In its long-range modes the Blighter radar can rapidly scan an area in excess of 3,000 km² to ensure that intruders are detected, identified and intercepted before they reach critical areas.
AUDS (Anti-UAV Defence System)
AUDS (Anti-UAV Defence System) is designed to disrupt and neutralise Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) engaged in hostile airborne surveillance and potentially malicious activity. The AUDS system combines electronic-scanning radar target detection, electro-optical (EO) tracking/classification and directional RF inhibition capability.
AUDS is a smart-sensor and effector package capable of remotely detecting small UAVs and then tracking and classifying them before providing the option to disrupt their activity. The system may be used in remote or urban areas to prevent UAVs being used for terrorist attacks, espionage or other malicious activities against sites with critical infrastructure.
Blighter Revolution 360 Radar
The Blighter Revolution 360 radar is a new, low-cost and lightweight mobile radar system for deployment on vehicle or trailer masts. Blighter Revolution 360 builds on the reliability, low power consumption, and ground clutter rejection capabilities of the Blighter B400 series radars by introducing a unique azimuth positioning unit, based on a maintenance-free cable-drive technology. By using its fully integrated positioner, Blighter Revolution 360 is able to provide a full 360° of coverage from a single, lightweight radar unit. The radar supports both continuous ‘scan & pan’ and ‘stare’ surveillance modes. In scan & pan mode, the radar performs a 90° e-scan, followed by a 90° mechanical-pan. To build-up a 360° degree picture, the radar steps three times by between four 90° sectors, before 'flying-back' 270° to the first sector.
Blighter B400 Series Radars
Blighter B400 series radars are long-range movement detection sensors for fixed and mobile surveillance applications. Modular construction provides for a selection of azimuth e-scan angles from 90° for a single unit (known as a 'B402') up to a full 360° e-scan for four units (known as a 'B442'). Blighter B400 series radars can detect human intruders at ranges in excess of 10 km and vehicles in excess of 20 km. Key benefits of these radars include: ultra-high reliability, zero-maintenance operation, operation over complex terrain including hills, ability to detect crawlers, very low false-alarm rate, low power consumption and low data communications bandwidth.
Blighter B303 Radar
The Blighter B303 radar is a medium-range movement detection sensor for vehicle-mobile and fixed-installation applications. The complete integrated radar unit provides an azimuth e-scan angle of 180°, and can detect a human intruder out to 3.3 km and vehicles to 8 km. The Blighter B303 radar is lightweight and compact, allowing it to be deployed on a vehicle mast. It is also extremely reliable and robust and can be operated for extended periods from vehicle power, compact batteries or solar-power.
Blighter B202 Mk 2 Radar
The Blighter B202 Mk 2 radar is a medium-range movement detection sensor for portable and mobile surveillance applications. The complete integrated radar unit provides an azimuth e-scan angle of 90°, and can detect a human intruder out to 3.3 km and vehicles to 8 km. The Blighter B202 Mk 2 radar is lightweight and compact, allowing it to be backpacked and carried by one man. It is also extremely reliable and robust and can be operated for extended periods from compact batteries or solar-power.
Other Blighter products
Other Blighter products include a selection of long-range high-performance cameras and un-cooled and cooled Thermal Imagers that are able to identify targets at distances compatible with the Blighter radars’ detection range. Lightweight, low power consumption, portable electro-optic (EO) systems complement the portable Blighter B202 Mk 2 radar system, whilst larger, fixed-installation precision EO systems complement the long-range Blighter B400 series radars. BSS offers a complete integrated portable Blighter B202 Mk 2 and electro-optic package called Blighter Explorer.
Blighter Software Applications
BSS products may be integrated into third-party command-and-control (C2) systems or may be operated by the BlighterView HMI 2. The BlighterView HMI 2 allows multiple radars and EO systems to be displayed on a background map and controlled through a simple and intuitive Microsoft Windows based software application. A software developer’s kit (SDK) is available free-of-charge to approved systems integrators allowing fast integration of the Blighter products into existing C2 systems.
BlighterTrack is a Radar target tracking application that is optimised for Blighter. It tracks Blighter radar targets and provides the operator with target track ID, heading and speed. A key benefit of BlighterTrack is that it continues to output the plot data with the track data to provide low latency target detection (plot) information to the operator, camera control system and 'Pattern of Life' (PoL) analysis software.
BSS is able to supply individual sensor products, including the Blighter radar, electro-optics, and software applications. We also have a range of simple surveillance system packages that offer a complete ready-to-use integrated surveillance system, including Blighter Scout and Blighter Explorer. However for large-scale or complex surveillance and security systems we work closely with System Integrators to support the integration of our products. BSS offer technical support and a software developers kit (SDK) to approved partners.
